More Koreans Are Staying Single |
|
A famous saying is “Have Fun. Stay Single.” It seems more and more people are taking this advice, and the effects of this choice are changing the world.
More and more people throughout the world are choosing to stay single, and they aren’t always the type of people you’d expect. The most noticeable segment of society is young, urban professionals, or “yuppies.” They tend to be between the ages of 25 and 35, live in cities, and have good careers. People are increasingly choosing to get married later and later throughout the world, putting careers ahead of family.
In Korea, this shift has exploded recently. The number of single-person households in the country has more than doubled in the last 10 years. Young people aren’t the only ones contributing to this increase. The divorce rate has also climbed, adding newly single households to the country. With fewer traditional families throughout the country, many elderly people have either chosen to or been forced to live on their own.
The growth of single households can greatly change the urban environment. With single people often come more restaurants, cafes, and convenience stores. This can have an extremely positive effect on urban areas. In addition, single people tend to have more flexible incomes and therefore spend more money on products, which can be a benefit in lean economic times.
This massive change isn’t unique to Korea. In fact, Koreans find themselves on the tail end of this trend; only 20 percent of Korean households are single. In Japan and the United States, this number is closer to 30 percent. In Sweden and some of the other Nordic countries, the number is approaching 50 percent. These numbers prove that singles are here to stay and they’re not going anywhere. |
