The First Public Movie Screening |
|
It’s easy to take movies for granted when there is a multiplex theater in every neighborhood and several new movies are released each week. But films as we know them today would have not existed without Auguste and Louis Lumiere, who held the first public movie screening in France over 100 years ago. The brothers’ natural curiosity and ingenuity, along with encouragement and guidance from their father, led to groundbreaking feats in the history of photography and film.
Auguste and Louis Lumiere were brothers who grew up with a passion for photography and a knack for science and mechanics. After finishing school, the brothers started their own business manufacturing and selling photographic equipment. They were always experimenting with cameras and the photographic process, eventually leading them to create their own “dry plate” process of photography. Their business was a success, but there was still much more to come from the Lumieres.
In 1894, Auguste saw a demonstration of American inventor Thomas Edison’s Peephole Kinetoscope. With the Kinetoscope, people could look through a peephole and watch a strip of film move past a light. Auguste brought a piece of the film to Louis, who worked on building a better camera than Edison’s. His invention, developed just a year after seeing Edison’s machine, was called the Cinematographe. The film in the Cinematographe moved at 16 frames per second (fps), which was much slower than the Kinetoscope’s 48 fps. It was also lighter and smaller than the Kinetoscope. (중략) |
